A New Look in the Band Room

Last year, a sign was posted on the band room door by Mrs. Craven. It read: "Anyone who wishes to paint a ceiling tile, please come see me." Now, two of the seven tiles taken over the summer have been returned, colorful and bright. The designs are of a flute and a trumpet. A third and fourth are in the works - one of a saxophone and another of a mixture of musical items. When they will join the others in the band room is not known, due to the busy schedule of the painter. The tiles, flimsy and easily broken at first, were taken down, dusted off, and painted, front and back, with two coats of Kilz, a special paint used to seal the surface and help protect it against water damage before being covered with color. After that, the design was drawn onto the clean white board, which stiffened up after the Kilz dried, and then the whole tile was painted.
Why are the ceiling tiles being painted? Over the years on countless music trips to other schools' band rooms, we noticed that almost every room we were in had a beautiful and bright mural on the walls. Mrs. Craven decided that our band room needed some color, and since the walls in the EHS band room are of wood panels, ceiling tiles were our only option. There are plenty more ceiling tiles that need painted, so anyone with an artistic flair who wants to can take a few home, just talk to Mrs. Craven first!
