Erie Junior High Summer Academy
The summer academy got off to a great start on June 2nd with 40 students enrolled. Students begin each day with a cardio workout, then spend some time researching careers before lunch. On Tuesday, Mrs. Tuck conducted a session on art careers. The afternoon finds the students either on the golf course, at the bowling alley or tennis courts or at the pool. Last Thursday they were able to take a trip to Kansas City, to a T-bones baseball game where the players read with them and stressed the importance of education.
The academy is funded through the Kansas Middle School Activity Advancement Grant. The three major components of this grant first requires career exploration, including trips to colleges and businesses, and the development of a 4-year education plan and research paper on the career of their choice. The second part requires a daily physical activity comprised of life-long sports, and the third is the application of math and reading in the real world.
Future activities include trips to NCCC, PSU, a local farm, manufacturing business, hospitals, restaurant, construction site, and much more.
The teachers are Mrs. Lanoir Rowland, Mrs. Tonya Craft, Mr. Ed Trujillo, and Ms. Olivia Selzer. We also have three wonderful volunteers who are giving their summer time to help. They are Emily Yockey, Sara South, and Katie Kiser.
