The Erie High School Prototyping and Problem Solving Class built two new moonbuggies to compete in NASA's Great Moonbuggy Race. The team left Erie on Wednesday, April 2nd and headed for Huntsville, Alabama, arriving on April 3rd. Friday, April 4th, was the race date. Out of 21 teams total, Erie Team 2 ran the course at a time of 3 minutes and 12 seconds with an added assembly time of 5 seconds, making the total time 3 minutes and 17 seconds.
Erie Team 2 had the fastest time of the day, beating the second place team from Huntsville by 18 seconds.Team 2 won first place, $1,000, a trophy, and all expenses paid for space camp. Erie Team 1 competed, but had a steering malfunction and was unable to finish the race. However, Erie Team 1 was awarded the Best Design Award, $1,000, and a plaque. Erie had great success. The Erie Moonbuggy Team thanks everyone who contributed to make this trip a success and is proud of the immense support the team receives from the community.
