SENIOR NOTES – January 08
College Goal Sunday: February 10, 2-4pm, Financial Aid experts will be volunteering their time to help you fill out the FAFSA. Closest sites to us are Pittsburg and Iola, and it’s all FREE. Scholarship drawings held during the afternoon. Flyers were sent home with grade cards.
College visits: STILL TRYING TO SET UP COLLEGE VISITS FOR YOU – COME SEE ME! Remember, you are allowed 2 college visit days. Allow enough time: 4-year schools usually want at least 2 weeks notice, so plan ahead. Many schools within an hour drive can be visited in a half day. Try to visit EARLY to help your decision-making process, and parents are welcome. Bring back a note from Admissions to give to Connie as proof of your visit. Remember, some technical programs in particular (PSU’s Automotive, Harley-Davidson, etc…) have waiting lists, so don’t put this off!!
TEACH grants: New program – a $4000 per year scholarship (for a total of $16,000) is available to under grads who want to go into the teaching profession. Must have a 3.25 GPA. Must teach in high need schools and high need fields for a minimum of four years within the 8 years after finishing the program. The following shortage fields are targeted: math, science, foreign language, special ed, bilingual ed, reading specialists, and other documented high-need fields. Should become available in July 2008, ask your college financial aid office.
AWESOME ACT Practice Test Site: Go to www.derbylibrary.com, then Databases, then Learning Express – Practice Tests, then College Entrance Exams.

Hixson Opportunity Award for KU:
The Hixson Opportunity Award is specifically designed for students who
have faced significant challenges that may hinder their ability to
attend college, and thus, the award amounts are significant. Each
recipient will have the opportunity to receive up to $20,000 for their
educational expenses ($5,000 per year for up to four years). Hixson
Opportunity Awards are available to ten entering freshmen attending KU
who are residents of the state of Kansas.
The application and additional information about the scholarship program
are also available online at www.scholarships.ku.edu/hixson.shtml. The
deadline to apply is February 1, 2008.

February 1st deadline – PSU: campus-wide and departmental scholarships have an application deadline of Feb. 1. Must apply for admission and pay $30 application fee before applying for scholarships, which are online at: https://go.pittstate.edu/scholaraship.app.init?JCgnbhtEddanM.
The application is also online at: https://go.pittstate.edu/apps.intro.
February 1st deadline – ESA Foundation Endowment Scholarships: can apply to no more than 3, $5 fee each one, must have 3.0 GPA or a minimum ACT 22, list in counseling office. Current application form may be downloaded at: www.esaintl.com/esaf. Must include a personal original letter, 2 signed letters of recommendation and original transcripts.
February 4 Deadline – Vocational Education Scholarship Program: through the Board of Regents, $10 fee, test date for the Differential Aptitude Test is March 1st, closest testing location is Fort Scott CC. About 240 $500 scholarships are awarded, may be renewed for second year, if the program is longer than one year. Must plan to enroll full time in a designated vocational program in Kansas. Pick up application in my office.
Feb. 15th deadline – USA Access to Education Scholarships:renewable scholarships to students demonstrating financial need. In addition to need, up to 50% will be targeted to members of an ethnic-minority group or those who are physically disabled. See www.usafunds.org/scholarship.
Feb. 15th deadline - W. K. Buntin Scholarship: for local FFA seniors, must describe SAE program and attach copies of leadership pages from your FFA record book, plus transcript and two letters of recommendation. Pick up applications from Mrs. T.
Feb. 15th deadline – Best Buy Scholarship: good grades, outstanding community service, apply at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships.
Feb. 15th deadline – FFA/Merle Kelly Ford, Inc. Scholarship: 1 scholarship at $1,000 - see FFA Advisors for more info, program details and application found at http://scholarships.ffa.org.
March 7th deadline – SAMMY 2008 “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Awards”:
Based on academics (35%), athletic excellence (35%), leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%). Rules, information and application: www.bodybymilk.com.
March 7th deadline – “Labs Are Vital” Scholarship:looking for students interested in life sciences, who are analytical and enjoy problem solving, or creative thinkers interested in design or video productions, could win a $2500 scholarship. Must submit a video, advertisement, or T-shirt design that causes others to consider careers in clinical lab science. More information at
March 15th deadline - Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund: one of the victims killed in Pentagon when plane crashed into it on 9/ll. Five $2,500 scholarships. Must have GPA 2.5 or higher, demonstrated leadership abilities through community service, extra curricular or other activities. Must submit application, transcript, 2 letters of recommendation, Fed. Financial Aid document, Essay, and photo. More info and application in my office.
March 15th deadline – KACRAO Quality Leadership Scholarship: four $500 awards available to a senior with a GPA of 3.25 or higher, minimum ACT composite of 22, and can provide evidence of leadership experience. Must also include a letter of reference, a one-page essay, and a detailed resume. Not need-based, and can be used with other awards. More information in Counseling office.
April 4 deadline – Junior Golf Scholarship: Five scholarships awarded – this is an academic scholarship, but student must have participated in junior golf activities, including high school golf. Based on academic performance, leadership, a written essay and financial need. $1250 per school year, renewable for up to four years. Must attend a KS college or university, including community colleges. Details and a downloadable application form are available at:

April 15 deadline – K-State’s Sigma Phi Epsilon Balanced Man Scholarship: one-$1,000,
One-$500, two-$250 for incoming male at K-State who demonstrate outstanding excellence in all aspects of scholastics and extracurricular activities, must include a short essay defining what a balanced man is to the applicant. No obligation to join fraternity. See Mrs. T for application.
LCMC Student Internship Program: must be 16, internship is unpaid, but at the end of 100 hours of service during a 4-month period, student is eligible for $500 scholarship payable to the college of choice. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about gift shop and hospital operations, customer service skills and patient/family relations. (plus it looks good on your resume, especially if you’re interested in the medical field, and the $500 scholarship is nice, too!!). They run this program every 4 months, see me for more information.
Barton County Community College Sports Medicine Scholarship: Books and Tuition scholarships to students interested in joining their athletic trainers’ staff while going to school. Get form in my office for more information.
K-State at Salina ELITE Scholarship Program: Enhancing Lives Through Technology and Engineering, a National Science Foundation scholarship grant program, offers 15-25 annual scholarships for academically talented students. Eligibility (meet one of the following): first generation college student, or come from a rural area, or economically disadvantaged, or member of a minority group. Must seek engineering technology degree in Computer Systems, Construction Engineering, Electronic/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Web Development Engineering. www.anycollege.com: $2000 student scholarship given away 4 times per year. No fee to sign up for this random scholarship drawing. Sign up by going to www.anycollege.com and clicking on the “Win a Scholarship” link. Ongoing deadlines are Dec. 31, March 31, and June 30th.
Kansas Masonic Lodge: Student loan program, interest free until you graduate, no Masonic Lodge affiliation needed to apply for the loan. Students who have been in the loan program for 2 years; remain a full-time student; have and maintain a 3.5 gpa; and major in certain areas of study may qualify for one of their scholarships. Grants are also available for the physically challenged (handicapped). For loan application, call 785-357-7646 during business hours. Loan applications must be completed and returned by April 15th, 2008. Brochures in my office.

Highland Community College: books and tuition scholarships for students interested in becoming part of the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine Program. For more information, email Tia Collins, head Athletic Trainer at: tcollins@highlandcc.edu, or fill out a questionnaire in counseling office.
Butler County Community College: scholarships available for those who possess basic skills in carpentry/woodworking or electricity/electronics or costuming to help in Theater Dept. A number of scholarships available for reliable students who desire to gain experience as theater technicians. Full tuition and books! Not necessary to major in drama or have knowledge of performing arts. Knowledge of tools, working drawings, safety, and common shop practices much more important. Scholarship day interviews on Feb. 2nd and Feb. 29th.

Southwestern College Athletic Training Education Program: this is an accredited program, and will qualify you to sit for the Board of Certification Exam to become a certified athletic trainer. More info in counseling office.
