Igloo in Preschool

by Melissa Peak

January 15, 2008

Last week if you were to walk into the preschool room, you wouldn't have noticed anything different until you opened the closets door and saw many gallon jugs.  Closets were filled until their was no more room.  Then Friday of last week we had plenty of gallon jugs to began building. Now walking into the room you will notice several gallon milk/tea/water jugs stacked.  Why are they stacked?  What are they making?

Preschool children are currently learning about winter items like:  snow, snowmen, snowflakes, icicles, penguins, migration, hibernation, polar animals, Eskimos, and igloos.  So with the help of children, students, and teachers who have been helping to collect the gallon jugs, the building of our igloo has begun.  As you can see in the pictures we had enough to start with one layer, but kept on going and soon had enough for the second layer. Then we had an abundance of jugs and have finished the third and started work on the fourth layer.

Keep those milk jugs coming though because we still need more, about 70 more to finish off the igloo before we will be done.  Altogether we will need 155 gallon jugs.  I will keep you posted with information and pictures as changes are made.

The children can't wait for the igloo to be more complete.  While they are eager to see the finished process, they are ready to start using it.   After more of the igloo is made the igloo is going to be used as our listening center.   The children have been told that when the next few layers of the igloo were completed we would be able to start using the igloo as a center while the dome got built.  I think we are just about ready for that listening center as you can see.

Here is an updated picture of our igloo. We now have six layers of the igloo complete.  The next few layers will begin the process of the dome. Please continue sending in the milk jugs.  We still need some more in order to complete the dome.
