Basketball of One Hundred Years Ago

As basketball season starts up, take a moment to look back on what basketball at Erie High once was. These pictures found at the Mem-Erie Museum on South Main Street of Erie give a vivid, despite their black and white appearance, look into the past. These teams played the courts in the school year of 1910-1911, when the high school was on Main Street before the present EHS building was built in 1951.
Note the letters on the basketball accompanying the boys' team. My guess is that it stands for Erie High School Devils. Is it possible that the Devils have been around since 1910? Also, the girls' pictures are on the fronts of postcards. Maybe, instead of buying wallet sizes, parents bought postcards of their players to send to family.
These pictures were donated to the Mem-Erie Museum: Open 3:30-5:00 on Thursdays and Fridays, or by appointment. For appointments, call (620) 244-3309 (Lavon Hoppas), or (620) 244-5427 (Flo Sanders). It is free admission to take a look into Erie's past, so please stop by!
