SENIOR NOTES – NOVEMBER 07
College visits: STILL TRYING TO SET UP COLLEGE VISITS FOR YOU – COME SEE ME! Remember,you are allowed 2 college visit days. Allow enough time: 4-year schools usually want at least 2 weeks notice, so plan ahead. Many schools within an hour drive can be visited in a half day. Try to visit EARLY to help your decision-making process, and parents are welcome. Bring back a note from Admissions to give to Connie as proof of your visit. Remember, some technical programs in particular (PSU’s Automotive, Harley-Davidson, etc…) have waiting lists, so don’t put this off!!
College Reps: We will have more reps coming back in spring.
AWESOME ACT Practice Test Site: Go to www.derbylibrary.com, then Databases, then Learning Express – Practice Tests, then College Entrance Exams.
Emporia State Visit Days: Mon-Friday at 10:30am. Request info, sign up for campus visit, and apply online at: www.emporia.edu/admiss.
Cowley County Community College: Senior Day November 14th. Allied Health dept offers many online classes, see www.cowley.edu/departments/allied/index.html.
Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College: Senior Day on Tuesday, November 13th.
Coffeyville Community College: information available on their Athletic Training dept.
Job Corps: a hands-on career training and education program that can help students find the path to personal and career success – at no cost. Gives income-eligible men and women, ages 16-24, an opportunity to gain experience to begin a career or advance to higher education. Training in more than 100 career areas. Brochure and 10-minute DVD in counseling office. Can also visit www.jobcorps.dol.gov.
Savannah College of Art & Design (Savannah, Georgia): offering summer programs for high school students. See www.scad.edu/summer.
Colby Community College: Senior Day November 16th. The only 2-year Veterinary Technology program in the state, also a Pre-Vet medicine 2-year transfer program.
Midwest Student Exchange Program: reduced out of state tuition program for 140 colleges/universities in Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. MSEP info online: http://msep.mhec.org. Brochures in my office.
Careers in Health Information Management: one of the fastest growing industries, responsible for the coordination, processing, data quality and security of a patient’s healthcare information. If you have an interest in computers, information technology, business, law or medicine, check out www.khima.com.

Hutchinson Community College: 9-1-1 Student Field Day for the Emergency Communications profession, Dec. 7th – hands-on experience with the latest equipment used in 9-1-1 Dispatch operations. See flyer on bulletin board.

Scholarship Opportunities:
Dec. 1st deadline - SAE Engineering Scholarship Program: applicant must intend to earn a degree in engineering or a related science (math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies, computer science), meet minimum GPA/ACT scores. www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm answers most frequently asked questions. Dec. 15th deadline - AXA Achievement Scholarship: one student from each state is selected to receive $10,000, winners are known as AXA Achievers. They are students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community. Past winners have founded nonprofit organization that offers basic computer/internet training, provided new and used bicycles at the holidays to kids who have a parent incarcerated, coordinated efforts to give visually impaired veterans the opportunity to attend, see and enjoy a major league baseball game with new technology, etc…
Dec. 14th Deadline – K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship: presented by Farm Bureau Financial Services, for students who have shown leadership in developing or implementing a program, project or service that meets a specific need for a family, group or community are exceptional candidates. Eligible students have an exemplary record of community service, and are seniors admitted to K-State for Fall 08. Must complete the K-State Scholarship application, and the K-State Civic Leadership Scholarship Application, received by Dec. 14th. More info: www.k-state.edu/nss/civicleadership/.
January 15th Deadline – McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship Award:high school seniors who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit by owning and operating their own businesses while in high school. Application and more info: www.mckelveyfoundation.org.
February 1st deadline – ESA Foundation Endowment Scholarships: can apply to no more than 3, $5 fee each one, must have 3.0 GPA or a minimum ACT 22, list in counseling office. Current application form may be downloaded at: www.esaintl.com/esaf. Must include a personal original letter, 2 signed letters of recommendation and original transcripts.
February 4 Deadline – Vocational Education Scholarship Program: through the Board of Regents, $10 fee, test date for the Differential Aptitude Test is March 1st, closest testing location is Fort Scott CC. About 240 $500 scholarships are awarded, may be renewed for second year, if the program is longer than one year. Must plan to enroll full time in a designated vocational program in Kansas. Pick up application in my office.
Feb. 15th Deadline – USA Access to Education Scholarships:renewable scholarships to students demonstrating financial need. In addition to need, up to 50% will be targeted to members of an ethnic-minority group or those who are physically disabled. See www.usafunds.org/scholarship.
Barton County Community College Sports Medicine Scholarship: Books and Tuition scholarships to students interested in joining their athletic trainers’ staff while going to school. Get form in my office for more information.
Nelnet $1 Million Scholarship Giveaway: Drawings held monthly starting November 9, 2007, through August 8, 2008. Enter by filling out the online entry form at www.nelnet.com/win, students can enter daily to increase their chances of winning.
LCMC Student Internship Program: must be 16, internship is unpaid, but at the end of 100 hours of service during a 4-month period, student is eligible for $500 scholarship payable to the college of choice. Interns will have the opportunity to learn about gift shop and hospital operations, customer service skills and patient/family relations. (plus it looks good on your resume, especially if you’re interested in the medical field, and the $500 scholarship is nice, too!!). They run this program every 4 months, see me for more information.
K-State at Salina ELITE Scholarship Program: Enhancing Lives Through Technology and Engineering, a National Science Foundation scholarship grant program, offers 15-25 annual scholarships for academically talented students. Eligibility (meet one of the following): first generation college student, or come from a rural area, or economically disadvantaged, or member of a minority group. Must seek engineering technology degree in Computer Systems, Construction Engineering, Electronic/Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Web Development Engineering. KU Music Auditions: Feb. 8-9, 22-23. Must apply for admission to KU and School of Fine Arts by Feb. 1st!
Kansas Masonic Lodge: Student loan program, interest free until you graduate, no Masonic Lodge affiliation needed to apply for the loan. Students who have been in the loan program for 2 years; remain a full-time student; have and maintain a 3.5 gpa; and major in certain areas of study may qualify for one of their scholarships. Grants are also available for the physically challenged (handicapped). For loan application, call 785-357-7646 during business hours. Loan applications must be completed and returned by April 15th, 2008. Brochures in my office.

Highland Community College: books and tuition scholarships for students interested in becoming part of the Athletic Training/Sports Medicine Program. For more information, email Tia Collins, head Athletic Trainer at: tcollins@highlandcc.edu, or fill out a questionnaire in counseling office.
Butler County Community College: scholarships available for those who possess basic skills in carpentry/woodworking or electricity/electronics or costuming to help in Theater Dept. A number of scholarships available for reliable students who desire to gain experience as theater technicians. Full tuition and books! Not necessary to major in drama or have knowledge of performing arts. Knowledge of tools, working drawings, safety, and common shop practices much more important. Scholarship day interviews on Feb. 2nd and Feb. 29th.
Heart of Leadership Award, Southwestern College: if you’re involved in youth leadership and are working on a terrific service project, see info in counseling office. $500 awarded to one project in each category: NHS, and Church Youth Group.
Due January 11 - Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship: this is a time-consuming and detailed application with essays, recommendation letters, personal exhibits, etc. You can’t wait until the last minute if you’re interested in getting this one done! Start early.

Southwestern College Athletic Training Education Program: this is an accredited program, and will qualify you to sit for the Board of Certification Exam to become a certified athletic trainer. More info in counseling office.
