Mrs. Smith's Second Grade class enjoyed a field trip to the Wilson County Old Iron Days. They watched cedar logs being cut up for lumber. They found out how farmers used to cut their wheat with a thrashing machine that separated the grain from the straw. A "Snake Oil Salesman" showed them the few medicines and remedies for ailments that people had "in the old days". Each of them got to pull a chain that blew a whistle at the rock crusher. Making apple juice, churning butter, trapping wild animals, and washing clothes by hand were just a few examples of chores that the children learned how to do. Knowing about all that work made them thankful for modern-day machines.
