Mrs. Martin's Class

Off To A Fantastic Start

September 24, 2007

Mrs. Martin's first graders are off to a fantastic start. The children are building that strong foundation for learning and have settled into a good routine.

As a review we have been working our way through the alphabet. We study a letter a day and have been eating our way through the alphabet. We had apples on "A" day and kiwi on "K" day. The food service department has provided our letter of the day snacks. It has been a real hit eating a snack for every letter of the alphabet.

Learning to read is such a vital part of first grade. Guided Reading groups have started. Students are given a new book each day and take it home each night to share with their family.

We have started Saxon Math. "Hands On" activities best describes math in first grade. Children have homework pages in math almost every night and must return them the following day. It reinforces skills and provides parent involvement.

We have 14 students in our classroom; 6 girls and 8 boys.
